Shoot the Blue Super Moon

Date: January 31, 2018
Time: 5:00pm - 6:30pm
Cost: Free
Location: Baldwin Hills Scenic Overview

You've probably heard that there will be a Blue Super Moon next week. Or is that a Super Blue Moon? But do you know what that really means? It means we have a great excuse pull our faces out of our screens, get out of the house, experience a sunset and make some amazing images!

Based on a bit of research and my super handy PhotoPills app, if we stand at the top of the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook, the full moon will rise directly behind the downtown LA skyline about a half hour after sunset. If this were a perfect world, the San Gabriel mountains wouldn't be there and buildings of downtown would be perfectly silhouetted against a giant moon. That's not going to happen, but the mountains are quite low and I think it will be a pretty awesome sight (and photo!)

Here's the schedule of events:
Sunset: 5:23
Moonrise: 5:54

You're going to want to bring your longest lens to this party (assuming you're going for the big moon behind downtown shot). A tripod is probably a good idea also. I suggest getting there early as this is always a popular sunset spot and other people may have figured out the moonrise thing also. Hope to see you out there!

What to Bring

  • Long lens
  • Tripod
  • A good attitude
