Explore LA by Metro PhotoRide: Downtown to Santa Monica
You know what a photowalk is….well, this is kind of like that with a public transportation twist. If you’ve never tried it, LA’s Metro train system is a fantastic way to explore this megapolis we call home. We’ll begin our adventure in historic Union Station with all of its wonderful art and architecture. From there, we’ll hop on the Red Line and explore several of the downtown stops before transferring to the Expo Line and eventually making our way to the end of the line in time to catch a classic California sunset at the Santa Monica Pier. We’ll take breaks for lunch and refreshments along the way. Feel free to hop on/hop off as you like….if one area really catches your eye, stay and shoot there as long as you like and catch up with the group at the next stop. If you can’t stay for the entire event, no problem, just turn around and head home whenever you need to.
Meeting Location: The Waiting Area inside Union Station. If you enter through the main entrance, this is just past the Info desk and adjacent to Traxx restaurant. If you enter from the East Portal or arrive by the Red or Purple lines, proceed through the underground walkway towards the main entrance until you see the large open area with many couches.
I’m still fine tuning the details of our schedule but some of the places I hope to include are:
Union Station - art, architecture and nearby Olvera Street
Civic Center/Grand Park- there’s always something happening at the park or grab some shots of iconic City Hall
Disney Concert Hall - there’s no end to the detail shots you can make at this architectural masterpiece
Grand Central Market - a perfect spot for lunch and plenty of photo opps as well
Bunker Hill/Angels Flight - great views of classic and modern downtown buildings
MOCA/Broad Museum - capture some culture with your camera
Exposition Park/USC - let’s see what’s to see at the Natural History Museum, California Science Center, the LA Rose Garden or on the Trojans’ campus.
Bergamot Station - an eclectic collection of art including several photography galleries.
Downtown Santa Monica - the end of the line and a short walk to the SM Pier
Note: if you don’t already have a Metro TAP card, you will have to purchase one from a vending machine at any Metro stop. The cost is $8 for an all day pass which includes the $1 reloadable TAP card. If you already have a TAP card, purchase a day pass for $7 or make sure you have enough on it to make it through the day.
