Shoot the Stars!
I've had this image of the Milky Way over the Santa Monica Pier in my head for a while and the darkest skies of the month are happening this weekend. My handy dandy PhotoPills app (thanks, Senthil!) tells me that the stars will literally align (with the pier) roughly between 9pm and midnight. So if anyone wants to join me in trying to make this shot happen or create other night images, come meet me at the base of the Santa Monica Pier at 8:30pm this Sunday evening (Mar 25).
I'm far from a master of night photography and I have no idea how this shot will turn out, but we'll never know unless we try. Light pollution will definitely be a factor but I have a feeling it just might add to the image. I believe we should see the entire arc of the Milky Way over the ocean as well. Lot's of interesting possibilities!
Don't forget your headlamps and tripods. A remote release/timer is also very handy. If you've never done this type of photography before, I suggest googling 'milky way photography tutorial' or 'night photography tutorial' - there are tons of them out there. You can also take a look at some of the night shots from our recent Santa Barbara Meetup (featured above is a great one by Senthil Kumar, our unofficial night photography guru).
Below is a photo of our meeting spot. If you have any trouble finding it, give me a ring 949-282-9660.

Hope to see you out there,
Ken
Dates: March 13 - March 26, 2019

Our India photography workshop itinerary covers the best of the must see monuments including the incomparable Taj Mahal but we veer off the beaten path as often as possible in search of more genuine visions of Indian life, such as: the Holi Festival of Colors, the magnificent Taj Mahal, Varanasi on the Ganges, Jodhpur (aka the Blue City) and a camel safari in the Thar! desert.
