Swim with Giants
Each summer, humpback whales journey to the warm, sheltered waters of Niue—a remote coral atoll in the South Pacific—to breed, give birth, and nurse their young. This rarely visited island becomes a tranquil nursery for these gentle giants, and an extraordinary setting for photographic exploration.

A Hidden Sanctuary
Unlike more trafficked destinations like Tonga and Tahiti, Niue offers solitude—fewer boats, minimal human interference, and space for intimate, unhurried encounters. The whales have time to acclimate, creating opportunities for powerful, close-range imagery and respectful interaction.

Designed for Photographers
Led by veteran underwater photographer Leighton Lum, this ultra-small group expedition is crafted for those seeking purpose-driven adventure. With only five participants, you’ll enjoy a personalized experience both in and out of the water, guided by local experts and attuned to Niue’s protected marine environment.

The Rhythm of the Blue
Our days begin early, scanning the ocean for signs of movement, then easing into the water for extended swim sessions. After a midday break to rest and recharge, we return to the sea—camera in hand and senses sharp—for more encounters framed by turquoise clarity and golden light.

If you’re seeking a rare and immersive way to connect with one of nature’s most majestic species, this is more than a trip—it’s an invitation to witness the wild, with reverence and wonder.

  • Q: Where is Niue?

A: Niue is a small island nation in the South Pacific, located roughly halfway between Tonga and the Cook Islands. Despite its remote setting, Niue is easily accessible via a direct 3.5-hour flight from Auckland, New Zealand.

Q: Is the water calm? What if I get seasick?

A: The weather during July and August is generally calm, with calmer seas, but occasional weather can roll in. It is recommended to bring seasickness medication just in case, to ensure a comfortable experience if any rougher conditions occur.

Q: What if I don’t want to do the second session of the day?

A: If you prefer not to join the second session of the day, feel free to hang out in town or relax back at the hotel. It’s totally up to you how you spend your time!

Q: What are the physical fitness requirements?

A: You must be able to swim in the ocean and cover a distance of 200-350 feet. Additionally, you should be comfortable in deeper water, where you may not be able to see the bottom.

    Q: Can my non-photographer friend/partner attend?

A: Absolutely! Travel partners who may not share your passion for photography are very welcome to join. Just make sure they’re comfortable being part of a group that focuses primarily on photography. However, due to limited space, we are unable to offer a discount for non-photographer partners.

    Q: Can I bring a drone?

A: Yes, you can! We have the necessary permits to fly drones, provided we follow local drone regulations and prioritize the respect for nature.

Q: What happens if the weather is bad?

A: If the weather is unfavorable or unsafe, we will remain on shore. While no refunds will be provided, we can use the day to explore the island, engage in landscape photography, or do photo editing courses.

Q: Do we need dive insurance?

A: Yes, proof of dive insurance is required.

    Q: Can I rent gear?

A: Yes, gear is available for rent at the local dive shop, but it will be at your own expense.

    Question: Is scuba diving allowed?
